What: Look back at Brooklyn’s rich and colorful legacy of cycling clubs and culture. From the South Brooklyn Wheelmen to the Whirling Dervishes, Brooklyn has long been a hotbed of cycling. Learn how these groups came to define cycling’s place in public spaces, and led the way to include women and minorities.  Presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Historical Society.

David V. Herlihy is the author of The Lost Cyclist (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010) and Bicycle: The History (Yale University Press), winner of the 2004 Award for Excellence in the History of Science. A leading authority in his field, he has been interviewed by numerous television, radio, and newspaper reporters in the U.S. and abroad, and his work has appeared in a wide variety of general interest and specialty magazines.

He is responsible for the naming of a bicycle path in Boston after Pierre Lallement, the original bicycle patentee, and for the installation of a plaque by the New Haven green where the Frenchman introduced Americans to the art of cycling in 1866. He is currently serving as the guest curator of Round Trip, an exhibition featuring unpublished photographs of Asia Minor taken in 1891 during Allen & Sachtleben’s historic “round the world” bicycle tour.

Brooklyn Historical Society, founded in 1863, is a nationally recognized urban history center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn's extraordinary 400-year history.  Located in Brooklyn Heights and housed in a magnificent landmark building designed by George Post and opened in 1881, today's BHS is a cultural hub for civic dialogue, thoughtful engagement and community outreach.   Brooklyn Historical Society connects the past to the present and makes the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today's diverse communities, and for generations to come.

New York Cycle Club, founded in 1936, is the largest such club in the city, an all-volunteer recreational cycling organization that offers its 2,000 members rides at all pace levels; weekend trips; a nationally recognized spring training program; monthly meetings featuring important speakers in the field.  NYCC offers a full calendar of special events, in a friendly environment where you'll meet other, like-minded cycling NY-ers.
