Many NYCC rides start at "The Boathouse" located on the
East side of Central Park in Manhattan, just slightly north of the
72nd St. However there are many other potential starting points.
The following are commonly used:
Statue of Civic Virtue, Queens
To get there by subway, take the E or F train to Union Turnpike. Exit
towards the front of the train. Once through the gates at the token booth,
go left (towards the front of the train) and left again to exit at the
"court house." The statue is right at the top of those stairs.
George Washington Bridge
This is a frequent departure point for rides that go into Bergen and Rockland
counties, saving 7 miles of city riding each way from the Boathouse. Reach
this by taking the "A" train to 175th Street station in Washington Heights,
exit towards the front of the train (when heading north). You can either
take elevators to the street level (Ft. Washington Avenue) or walk north
underground till you get to the bus station and take the stairs or escalator
up to the street level. We meet at the corner of 178th St. and Ft. Washington
Avenue (or if it is cold outside, then we meet just inside the bus terminal
at the street level). There are bathrooms at the east (Broadway) end of the
bus terminal, and sources of food and drink.
242nd St and Broadway, Bronx
This is a popular jumping off point for those C Rides that go north along the
east side of the Hudson, saving 10 miles of city riding each way from the
Boathouse. Reach this by taking the 1/9 train to the northern terminus. Exit
to the north; go down the stairs to the right. We meet on the east side of
Broadway at the edge of Van Cortlandt Park.
Woodlawn, Bronx (Jerome and Bainbridge)
This is another popular starting / ending spot for rides that go into central
Westchester, saving 10 miles of city riding each way from the Boathouse.
Reach this by taking the 4 train to the northern terminus. Exit to the north;
go down the stairs to the left. We meet at the benches in Van Cortlandt park
on the west side of Jerome, just to the north of the station.
Dyckman & Broadway, Manhattan (The RING garden)
This starting point can be used for rides that go north to Westchester, saving
8 miles of city riding each way from the Boathouse. Reach this by taking
the "A" train to the Dyckman/200th St. station. Exit in the middle of the
train; take underpass to other side, go right up the steps, and left up the
next steps. You're facing the garden. There is a McDonalds across Broadway
that can be used as a restroom and food stop.
