2010 Spring Training Series for A-riders

Join us for our A-rider Spring Training Series (STS), a graduated training program of early season rides for experienced cyclists with developed group-riding skills who want to improve their strength and endurance. For 2010, the series will once again offer camaraderie and friendly support in a progression of organized group rides over some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain in the area to prepare you for our unforgettable, all-day epic rides to places far from Nyack. For those who want a challenging ride but don't want to go the full distance, some routes feature halfway bailouts. Check the online ride listings for STS ride details. Always check the NYCC message board for last-minute ride information.

You don't need to sign up for the series or attend every ride. All riders are expected to pay attention to cue sheets, take their pulls up front, and be self-sufficient in the event they find themselves riding alone. Helmets are mandatory; aerobars and ATBs are out. If you are still honing your group riding skills and are uncomfortable in rotating pacelines, we urge you to join an A-level SIG program and join an A-level STS next year. Prior to the first ride, please reread NYCC's web page on pacelines.

The leaders of the A STS anticipate following a similar philosophy to the one employed in previous years. During earlier seasons, we found that our rides would typically break into 2 main groups: one that gravitated toward a pace of about 19-20mph, and a faster group that tended to move at a slightly more brisk 20-22ish pace. The two often converged for lunch and return train rides if they were on the agenda. In 2010, given that the A-23 STS Series that coincided with the A-STS last year is not being officially run, there is the possibility that some of the leaders of that series will integrate into the A-STS, resulting in another group moving at a faster pace than any we ran last year. This is a speculation at this time, not a certainty, so we suggest interested parties refer back to the website for updates as well as employing our ride listings as a guide.

As was the case in the previous year, Gerald Seppey and Ron Roth will lead the series, along with a rotating group of co-leaders. The rides will be held each Saturday starting Feb 27th and officially ending on May 15th with our graduation ride. (Note: due to a late Memorial Day Holiday this year, an extra ride on May 24th might be added to the series - stay tuned.) Expect the early rides to be at more moderate speeds, over shorter distances and with limited vertical gain. Progressively, the pace and distance will be cranked up over more topographically challenging terrain, with the last ride being approximately 105 miles with in the vicinity of 8,000 feet of vertical gain. For further information about the A STS, please contact Gerald Seppey or Ron Roth.
